Description
Shared recognition of common ecological and heritage values, as well as their potential for sustainable development, is a priority of this Project, by environmental education and dissemination interventions, with a view to: enhancing ecosystem services, habitats conservation, enhancing local development on the basis of ecotourism, contributing to integrated cross-border management and shared resources
Objectives
- Improve the protection and sustainable management in natural areas of Lower Guadiana river, by triple integration: territorial, sectorial and social
Results
The main expected results of the VALAGUA project are:
•Integration of qualitative and quantitative aspects of water management among the main users on both sides of the Guadiana Basin
•Integration of transboundary water management with the conservation of riparian ecosystems
•Integrated management of water and biodiversity by key actors and decision-makers in the contiguous territories of the Natura 2000 Network of Lower Guadiana river
•Eco touristic valorization of the resources
Next challenges
VALAGUA responds to a significant set of challenges and opportunities that characterize the territory of Alentejo-Algarve-Andalusia, at the level of:
- Detected territorial asymmetries
- The need to preserve and enhance the natural heritage, namely water and its role as support for ecosystem services
- Importance of cross-border cooperation in improving water use efficiency
- Need to foster cooperation in scientific research and shared knowledge of natural heritage
