Streamwise non-uniform flow in single rectangular channel (Flume at Irstea Lyon-Villeurbanne, France)

Entity

Description

The flood hazard must be accurately assessed during extreme flood events. The prediction of the very high flows is not an easy task due to the lack of field data and to the strong link between flow resistance and the land occupation of the floodplain. The project aims at improving the flood hazard assessment including 1) investigating the hydrodynamic structure associated with extreme flood flows; 2) assessing existing numerical modeling for return periods higher than 1000 years.

Objectives

  • The main objective is the characterization and modelling of the flow in extreme flood condictions.

Results

The project is divided in 3 main tasks and 6 sub-tasks.

The results comprise the experimental data obtained in laboratory namely with lateral, vertical and longitudinal transitions in hydraulic roughness from emergence to low submergence of the roughness elements.

The other task is related to the assessment and improvement of the modelling practices. Numerical simulations against experimental data and real flood events will be performed.

Next challenges

The project ends in 2018. The future challenges concern the accuracy of the numerical modelling results in the context of floods with very high return periods (T>1000 years).
