Entity

Description

Floods in estuarine marginal zones are associated with particular climatological conditions, as high tidal levels, storm surges and intense fresh-water discharges. In a context of climate change, rising sea levels and more extreme climate conditions will increase the vulnerability to inundation of estuarine margins. MOLINES project addresses the risk of flooding in adjacent areas of estuaries considering the different hazards in an integrated way.

Objectives

  • Creating a coordinated strategy for risk management
  • Assess flood risk :urban and interface areas
  • Improving scientific knowledge in estuarine margins flooding processes for different climate scenarios

Results

  • Territorial vulnerability assessments for multi-spatial scales and flood risk assessment for different climate scenarios
  • Early-warning system for inundation: automatic inundation bulletin and water height at critical locations
  • WebGIS platform for access to real time forecasts, early warnings and risk analysis
  • Emergency planning guidelines for preparedness and emergency response, and land-use and occupation adaptation actions to flooding and future sea-level rise

Next challenges

To apply the generic tools to the whole Portuguese coast and estuaries
