Description

To reduce potential negative impacts originated by dam and dike failure, reliable simulation tools are needed. This Project aims at accomplishing this goal by assembling and validating a suite of mathematical simulation tool for embankment erosion and failure by overtopping encompassing both hydraulic and geotechnical phenomena in the conceptual model. For validating the numerical simulation tool, a set of laboratory tests will be conducted to understand the mechanics of breach evolution.

Objectives

  • New generation 3D numerical model for fluid-sediment mixtures based on a conceptual framework on embankment breaching.

Results

• Comprehension of the flow hydrodynamics near the breach based on experimental tests of embankment failures based on 3D printing of the breach
• Deepening of knowledge on novel instrumentation, visualization and measuring techniques for detailed characterization of breaching processes
• Database on embankment dam failures resulting from intense laboratory work
• Hybrid numerical model for embankment’s breaching failure combining 3D meshless solver and 2D modelling
