Description
Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) – storing water in aquifers during times of excess – is a key strategy to enrich groundwater resources, addressing the typical mismatch between water demand and availability. MAR encompasses a complex interaction of physical, biological and hydrochemical processes influencing water quality and the sustainability of infiltration rates. MARSoluT addresses these processes and on how they affect each other, in a multi-disciplinary team.
Objectives
- Understand MAR systems and tailor them for best performance in terms of storage, quality polishing goals, infiltration rates, socio-economic viability
Results
Characterization and instrumentation of MAR sites and experimental facilities to optimize MAR design and operation.
Training 12 Early Stage Researcher with specific MAR-related research topics, in a collaborative effort with a multi-disciplinary team. Formation of new experts on MAR systems planning, fostering new employment for research, industry, and regulatory agencies, to implement MAR into sound and safe Integrated Water Resources Management concept.
