3D Groundwater flow and transport model (FEFLOW) of Zhangji area

Entity

Description

Development of mathematical flow & transport model, definition of water vulnerability to pollution, wellhead protection zones definition and management decision tools development in order to support and inform the management policies for priority waters and water resources protection and its broader application to Chinese river basins.

Objectives

  • Development of a methodology to design water pollution management policies, flexible enough to be applied to a wide range of situations and watersheds
  • Identification of effective and sustainable management policies of surface- and groundwater resources.

Results

Groundwater flow (MODFLOW & FEFLOW) & transport models for the multi-layered system of aquifers in Zhangji area.

Aquifer’s pollution vulnerability (DRASTIC method).

Wellhead protection zoning (Krijgsman & Lobo-Ferreira methodology).

Groundwater & surface water pollution risk assessment (USGS & WRASTIC methods).

Support decision tools for surface- & groundwater protection optimization & risk management.

Next challenges

Improve the methodologies & apply them to other Chinese river basins. Incorporate climate change.
