Entity

Description

The objective of this study was to determine the vulnerability of the groundwater resources of the aquifer systems that integrate the Metropolitan Region of Recife. This assessment was based on the numerical modelling of the groundwater flow in the region which was used, after calibration, to verify the impacts that different possible water extraction scenarios can have in the groundwater availability.

Objectives

  • Identification of future extraction scenarios and modeling the impact of these scenarios on water availability.

Results

Identification of all existing hydrogeological information, development of new groundwater samplings to monitor its quality, development of a database, numerical modelling of the groundwater flow, identification of future scenarios and modelling the impact of these scenarios on water availability.

Next challenges

1) Zoning and definition of exploration restrictions dynamically by reviewing the exploration map at the latest every 3 years based on existing monitoring  and 2) obtaining monitoring data with new information on geometry and hydraulic parameters of the aquifer systems.
