Entity

Description

Activated carbon adsorption is considered one of the best available technologies in water treatment to control natural organic matter and micropollutants in raw water that resist to conventional treatments. The main objective of the EMPOWER+ project is to develop new high-performing granular (GACs) and powdered (PACs) activated carbons and reusable magnetic PACs, prepared by physical activation of pine nut shells for improved water treatment.

Objectives

  • To develop new high-performing GACs, PACs and reusable magnetic PACs prepared by physical activation of pine nut shells for improved water treatment

Results

Physical activation of pine nut shells (PNS) and processing to obtain high performing GACs, PACs and sub-micron size PACs (sPACs).
Magnetization of PACs and sPACs for their recovery, regeneration and reuse.
Evaluation of the PNS-derived activated carbons produced for different drinking water treatment technologies/applications: GAC filters for point-of-use; settleable PACs for conventional treatment; PACs and sPACs for hybrid processes with low-pressure membranes.
