Description
The area of Middle Ave, in the north of Portugal, corresponding to the zone of greater industrial density, that includes Guimarães, Vizela, Santo Tirso, Famalicão and Trofa, was considered in the decade of 70 the "most polluted zone" of the basin.
The textile industry was and is very important for the economic and social development of the region, however, this growth was not followed by the development of treatment facilities, causing a gradual degradation of water resources in the region.
Objectives
- To solve the problem of domestic and industrial sewage discharged throughout the Rio Ave.
- The Ave region had a high population density and about 500 textile industries that dumped their sewage into the river
Results
After 2011 is resurgent the aquatic communities, the industry that uses surface water for labor no longer complains about the quality of the same, civil society complaints about water quality have declined dramatically, municipalities have recovered the banks and created parks along the river, the quality of life of the people who work and live in the region has improved significantly and new economic opportunities have emerged linked to the river.
