Over the last few years, the municipality of Águeda has been removing exotic aquatic invasive species from the River Cértima. These species affect both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, which is why actions have been carried out to remove species such as Ludwigia sp., Myriophyllum aquaticum, Azolla sp. or Eichhornia crassipes, the latter mainly in the Pateira de Fermentelos lagoon. Mechanical methods are favoured to achieve the desired results.

Results

  • Mechanical control of the presence of invasive alien flora species (IAS): Removal of floating and rooted biomass of IAS specimens, using physical / mechanical and manual means;
  • Bank consolidation and densification of native vegetation to restore the riverside habitat
  • Actions to monitor the work carried out;
  • Actions to raise awareness and disseminate science on the subject of IAS and nature conservation in wetlands;
