Submarine freshwater discharges: characterization and evaluation study on their impact on the Algarve coastal ecosystems

This project aims at: (1) mapping an area in the continental shelf where SGD is known to occur in the intertidal zone; (2) estimate the amount of fresh water discharge; (3) investigate the impact these SGDs have in the local ecosystems; (4) test a remote sensing methodology for detection of the SGDs; and, (5) developing a methodology to detect fresh water discharges offshore, on the innermost continental shelf, in order to apply it to the Portuguese coastal aquifers.
