Description

Located in Alentejo, in southern Portugal, Alqueva is a project where the Alqueva dam is the source of a system of 69 dams and reservoirs.

Alqueva has a size, scope and modernity of infrastructure that allows it to irrigate an area of 130,000 hectares, produce reversible hydroelectric power enabling full complementarity with other renewable energies such as photovoltaic and wind energy, public and industrial supply, preservation of the environment and heritage or territory planning.

Results

Alqueva irrigates 130,000 hectares and is expanding to benefit another 20,000. Alqueva produces energy, reinforces the water supply to 200,000 inhabitants and can contribute with more than 500 million euros a year to the Alentejo's Gross Domestic Product, creating over 10,000 permanent jobs in the agricultural, agro-industrial and tourism sectors.

Next challenges

The current challenge is the expansion of the irrigation perimeter, from 130,000 to 170,000 hectares, with the construction of new adductors for more dams, ensuring the water supply for further territory. The new infrastructures integrate large photovoltaic plants, in a focus on solar energy.
