Description

This project aims at the detection of multiresistant bacteria in the water area of Ave, and the potential impacts on the public health and environmental quality of the river, based on the characterization of the tributaries received by the WWTP in the region with respect to antibiotics and resistant bacteria , evaluating the performance they present either in the treatment of these substances and disinfection of the discharged effluents, or in the dissemination of microbial resistances.

Objectives

  • Characterize the presence of multiresistant antibiotics and bacteria in effluent from WWTP inserted in the Ave river basin
  • Characterize the efficiency of antibiotic treatment and degree of disinfection of the WWTP for the study: Ste. Emilião, Serzedelo, Lordedo/Aves e Ave
  • Evaluate microbial resistance profiles in surface and residual waters (domestic and hospital)
  • Identify potential foci of more relevant contamination of antibiotics and / or resistant bacteria in this basin, in the set of effluents studied
  • Assessment of conventional processes in the treatment of emerging pollutants, and of alternative technologies dedicated to this specific treatment
  • Propose recommendations and / or actions to minimize possible identified impacts.
