Description

Serviços Municipalizados de Água e Saneamento (SMAS) de Sintra are the biggest municipal water distribution entity in Portugal, with more than 191,000 customers, serving a population of 385,954 inhabitants (CENSUS 2021), spread over a area of ​​320 km². They are also responsible for the management of public drainage and wastewater treatment systems and the collection and transport of urban waste to an appropriate final destination.

 

75 years after its creation, in May 1946, SMAS Sintra intends to assert itself, more and more, as a benchmark in the sustainable development of the Municipality of Sintra, based on high standards of protection and enhancement of environmental systems and human resources, consolidating an image of trust, transparency and competence.

 

The water supply system in operation comprises five own abstractions, 51 reservoirs, 34 pumping stations, a water treatment station, 158 km of adduction pipelines and 1.663 km of distribution pipelines.

 

In terms of wastewater, the system comprises 1.020 km of networks of collectors and outfalls, based on 17 wastewater treatment plants and 27 pumping stations. The sanitation network to the south of the municipality drains into the Águas do Tejo Atlântico system.
