Description

The Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) is the Portuguese public administration entity whose mission is to develop and monitor the management of environmental policies and sustainable development.

 

Some of the assignments:

  • Propose, develop and monitor the implementation of environmental policies;
  • To exercise the functions of National Water Authority, under the terms of the Portugues Water Law;
  • To exercise the functions of National Authority of Safety of Dams;
  • Develop and ensure the implementation of strategic options, policies and measures for a low carbon economy;
  • Exercise the functions of National Waste Authority;
  • To exercise the functions of National Authority for Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control, National Environmental Impact Assessment Authority and Strategic Environmental Assessment Authority of Plans and Programs, as well as to exercise the functions of competent authority for the European emissions register and pollutant transfers (PRTR);
  • Develop and maintain a national environmental information system;
  • Promote education, training and awareness-raising for the environment and sustainable development;
  • Ensure the management of the network of environmental laboratories;

  • The APA comprises five hydrographic district administrations covering the whole continental territory of Portugal and it is responsible for the Water Resources Monitoring Networks.
