HIDRA, Hidráulica e Ambiente, Lda. (www.hidra.pt) is a Portuguese engineering consultancy company, founded in Lisbon in 1992 by José Saldanha Matos, specialized in water supply and sanitation, environmental engineering and related areas, focusing its activities on consultancy services for the central and regional administration, water utilities, private operators, as well as, non-profit organizations.
HIDRA, Lda is committed to the valorisation of the water sector, with special focus on water resources and environment, together with its suppliers, partners and clients.
In the 1990’s, the main activities or business areas of the company focused on the development of studies and the design of water supply, wastewater and urban drainage systems and wastewater treatment plants. Other complementary activities were the development of environmental impact assessment studies and hydrology and water resource planning.
In this first decade of the 21st century, the company has extended its repertoire of skills to include technical audits, economic and financial feasibility studies, monitoring studies and infrastructures' operation and maintenance planning.
The company has developed its own “know-how” and has been a pioneer, in Portugal, in the development and dissemination of low cost sustainable sanitation, non-conventional drainage solutions and in the application and dissemination of dynamic simulation models for assisting in the advance management of sanitary/stormwater systems in urban areas.
In the last two decades, HIDRA, Lda has developed more than 400 technical and environmental studies and plans and preliminary and detailed design projects. The company has been involved in large-scale projects, such as the Lisbon Drainage Master Plan and Studies and Tender Process for the Design and Construction of the Lisbon Drainage Tunnels and Associated Interventions (as leader), in Portugal. Internationally to highlight the Sanitation and Drainage Master Plan for the Greater Maputo Metropolitan Area, in Mozambique (funded by World Bank), the Design of the New Water Distribution Networks and Customer Connection for Dar es Salaam, in Tanzania (funded by World Bank) and the Fogo and Brava Islands Water Supply and Sanitation Master Plan, in Cape Verde (funded by Lux Development).
