Description

Águas do Norte, SA was constituted by Decree-Law no. 93/2015, of May 29, throughout the merger of Águas do Douro e Paiva, SA, Águas do Noroeste, SA, Águas de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, SA and SIMDOURO - Saneamento do Grande Porto, SA, all integrated in the Águas de Portugal Group. Subsequently, it was granted by the Portuguese state, under an exclusive regime, the concession for the operation and management of the multi-municipal water supply and sanitation system in the North of Portugal, for a period of thirty years.

On February 1, 2017, Decree-Law no. 16/2017 created the multi-municipal water supply system in the south of Grande Porto and the multi-municipal sanitation system in Grande Porto, both by split-up of the multi-municipal system for water supply and sanitation system of the North of Portugal, and the respective managing entities, respectively Águas do Douro e Paiva, SA and SIMDOURO - Saneamento do Grande Porto, SA.

Currently, Águas do Norte is the entity in charge of the operation of the multi-municipal “upstream system” (provided to the Municipalities), responsible for the capture, treatment and supply of water for public consumption, and for the recollection, treatment and rejection of domestic, urban and industrial effluents and effluents from septic tanks.

Águas do Norte also assumes the exploration and management of the water supply system of the Northwest region, as a result of the conclusion of a partnership between the state (Central Administration) and 8 Municipalities (Local Administration), which implements a vertical process that unites in a single management entity “upstream systems” (provided to the Municipalities), and “downstream systems” (provided to the end users, the citizens) of water supply and sanitation of wastewater, in a regular, continuous and efficient way.

The operation and management of such systems includes the design, construction, extension, repair, renovation, maintenance and improvement of infrastructures and the acquisition of equipment and facilities required for the correct development of those activities.
